Notes
  • Embroidered cover title with fragments of figures of Mother Goose holding a goose on a lead.
  • On verso of first leaf is a dedication written in ms on paper scroll" 'A mon cher petit William de la part de sa vieille grand-mère ce 1er Septembre 1897."
  • Attribution of place from partial imprint across oars borne by young sailor on first page.
  • A nursery rhyme anthology composed of full-page collages made from cut-out illustrations from a variety of sources. The contents are quite comprehensive, including many of the most familiar rhymes, "Hark, hark, the dogs do bark," "Pat-a-cake," "Humpty Dumpty," and "Bo Peep," but also more unusual ones such as "Richard and Robin," "Dickory, dickory, dare,/ The pig went up in the air," "There was a little man/ And he had a little gun," and "Come, butter, come." There are also some limericks.
  • Illustration of old black man above verse about organ grinder's monkey ending "I wish I was in Monkey land / The place where I was born," which seems to be an early version of the 20th-century nonsense song whose second stanza goes "I wililish I walalaas in mololonkey lalaland."
  • One of the cut-outs is of Dude, one of Palmer Cox's most popular Brownie characters and another of J. & P. Coats best sixcord thread, both of which are consistent with the date in the dedication.
