Undated, but Ward, Lock & Tyler published under that imprint from 1865-1873 (cf. Brown); Walter Crane's contributions to the first 3 titles in this series is dated 1865 by Spencer and Masaki.
"One shilling, coloured; indestructible edition on strong cloth, 2s"--At head of title.
Text and ills. both printed on one side only; text, with decorative head- and tail-pieces, printed in red, facing chromoxylographs; first and last leaves, with advertisements printed in black and set in 2 cols., laid down to wrappers.
Illustrations: 6 five-color full-page chromoxylographs in yellow, red, green, brown, and blue, 4 signed by Calvert; illustrations possibly by Crane (cf. "The Work of Walter Crane," 1898, p. 3, citing this title as Crane's 1865 work).
Publisher's advertisement on lower wrapper for "Ward, Lock, & Tyler's New Shilling Series of Painted Toy Books, embellished with large spirited engravings, printed in coulours by Edmund Evans, post 4to, fancy wrappers," listing 7 titles this being the second.
Additional publisher's advertisements for Ward, Lock, and Tyler's "juvenile illustrated gift books" and for their "pretty picture books for all good children" laid down to front and rear wrappers, resp.
