Notes
The first forty leaves of album contain eighty-five mounted greeting cards, the majority given to Beatrix on Christmas or Valentine's Day from close family members, including Nurse MacKenzie and a few close family friends, like the Gaskells. Some of the cards were printed in France or Germany; others were printed by Marcus Ward.
Inscribed on first leaf "H B Potter from Mama Valentine's Day 1872" in Helen Leech Potter's hand. Mrs. Potter also wrote in pencil below each cardthe names of the people and the year they presented the cards to Beatrix.
"Authenticated by Dr. Mary Juble [?]; this album was sold with other effects after her death" pencilled below gift inscription.
There is what apears to be an original drawing in pencil behind the netted cut-out of the card from Grandmama Leech for 1872. Justin G. Schiller believes this may be by Potter herself.
Some of the cards have been cut away or cut out entirely and it has been speculated that Potter apparently used them as a design resource of some kind.
Provenance: Rev. R. St. John Fisher of Carlisle; Phillips, Edinburgh 2 November 1978; Christie's East NY 16 April 1997 (Doris Frohsdorff collection). Owned at one time by Dr. Mary Noble, who authenticated the album and by purchase to Doris Frohnsdorff
