Summary note
Reprintings of a selection of 26 of the "most innovative and entertaining letters" that Lewis Carroll wrote to children, each printed in a separate sheet of paper and placed within an envelope printed with one of the 26 letters of the alphabet and a corresponding picture (A, Alice, etc.), after Tenniel; 3 pages before the letters, including table of contents and one leaf at end with notes and colophon information.
Notes
  • Letters addressed to: Alice Liddell and her sisters (Lorena and Edith), Henrietta Dodgson, Princess Alice (granddaughter of Queen Victoria), and Zoe Dodgson, and others.
  • Place of publication and date from colophon.
  • Pictorial envelopes (e.g. Alice for A, Bee for B, Queen for Q, Zoe for Z) provide a kind of rebus alphabet.
  • A limited edition of 10 copies.
  • With an "artist statement" page, laid in, explaining the concept and providing some information about the letters.
Binding note
  • Publisher's textured red paper-covered boards with an uncovered "piano hinge binding" showing the sewing binding construction; marbled endpapers.
  • Structure of the spine allows the bound envelopes to be "fanned out" into a circle or semi-circle for display, with selected pictorial envelopes visible.
  • Cotsen copy: Within a red cloth clamshell box, spine with black morocco label gilt-stamped with title and date.
