    Notes
    • Writing samples in script, capitals, gothic, fraktur, French, Gansley (Chancery), and raised hand, with names of the hands printed in decorative headings, some with elaborate flourishes, knots, and pictorial decoration.
    • Illustrations: Engraved pictorial title page depicts a boy writing at a writing desk, with a bookcase and learning instruments in the background; plate 1 illustrates how to cut a quill in 9 steps, and plate 2 shows how to hold a pen correctly for writing.
    • "Johann Jakob Roschi (1752-1794) was writing master at the Kunstinstitute in Bern from 1871 on. After his early death, the present work was completed by his son and successor jakob Emanuel, who added the last two plates. An interesting feature is that the work was also sold in single leaves mounted on cardboard, for simultaneous use in classes." Doede 227 (2 copies, only 1 complete); Zurich Exhibition Cat. 24 & 39; Berlin Cat. 4936 (copy lost).
    Binding note
Contemporary quarter vellum, with decorative tan paper-covered boards, upper cover with cut plain paper shield onlay, lettered in pencil: "Roschi."
