  • A manual alphabet with the hand signs and letters arranged in 5 rows of 6 is placed at the center of the handkerchief. It is surrounded by a border of animals, with pictures of mothers signing with their children in the lower left and right hand corners. Below the manual alphabet is printed "By means of this alphabet, any person may teach a child, born deaf and dumb, a language. The eyes of the Child will inform him, the different there is between each letter, and when He sees, you make or place the letters HORSE, COW &c. He will understand, clearly, the thing designated by them.
