(Dexter Proctor) 245 10 Dexter P. Hosley's journal from Saint Joseph's to California by the overland route, |f1852. 300 1 |fv. (57 leaves) ; 19 x 16 cm. 520 Consists of Hosley's journal (in pencil), with a partial typed transcription, two obituary newspaper clippings, and a trade card of the S.S. COLIMA. In the journal, Hosley documents the obstacles of an overland migrant's journey---Native American ambushes, scant water, and constant bouts of dysentery. Hosley and party left St. Joseph, Missouri on May 20, 1852 and arrived in the Sacramento River valley, bustling with gold miners, in mid-September, 1852. The end of the journal documents Hosley's wages and credit accounts for miscellaneous farm labor in 1853-1855. 541 1 |cGift ofMrs. Esther A. Hosley and Mrs. Walter E.
