      Summary note
      • In this collection of 19 papers from a workshop held March 2002 in Washington, D. C., contributors examine the reasons why statistics showing significant improvements in life expectancy above age 65 apply mainly to whites. Topics of papers addressing the nature of racial and ethnic differences include the effects of identification and classification, disparities in the US, and the reasons for ethnic differences perceived in rates of dementia and Alzheimer's Disease. Those addressing concepts and methodologies include the contribution of life-course factors, selection processes, and issues of immigrant health. In topics on the search for causes, contributors address genetic factors, risk factors related to economics and behavior, biobehavioral factors, and access to health care. The closing papers address the challenge of identifying effective interventions, and a set of international case studies. The final report of this panel is titled Understanding Racial and Ethnic Differences in Health in Late.
