Summary note

Ms. book of hours for use of Paris, written and illuminated in France. This manuscript originally formed part of another Book of Hours, now in Paris, Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal, MS 647. Both have been attributed to the atelier of Rohan Master named after the "Grandes Heures de Rohan" of c. 1420 (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, MS Lat. 9471), which by the mid-15th century belonged to a Rohan.

Notes

• Decoration: Line-endings in rectangles of divided blue and pink fields with white geometric patterns and with gold balls. 1-line champide initials for antiphons, and psalm veriscles. 2-line champide initials occasionally for collects. 2-line pink of blue initials with foliate infillings on gold grounds for psalms, hymns, and collects 3-line initials of the same decoration for "Obsecro te," canonical hours of the Long Hours of the Cross, Seven Requests to the Lord, and Vespers Psalm and the first Psalm of Lauds of the Office of the Dead. Outer borders of foliate and floral patterns, including leafy acanthus in red, blue, green, and pink, and balls tipped with gold, and baguettes of foliate stems on gold on every text page. 2 historiated initials of 3 lines for Matins of the Long Hours of the Cross and 4 lines for "O intemerata." 11 large and 33 small miniatures on 11 pages: on each page, one three-quarter page, arched miniature surrounded by three rectangular vignettes, usually with diapered grounds. Colors of royal blue, vermilion red, pink, mauve, lavender, beige, green and yellow-green.
• Layout: Parchment; single column of 16 lines, ruled 8 mm. apart ; 215 x 155 (112 x 70) mm.

Binding note

19th century, English deep-red velvet covers; binding is packed with printer's waste in English. In 18th-century, French red-morocco case tooled with gold, with spin-title, "Ancienne Hueres Manuscrite Sur Velin Avec Mignatures," in gold.
