Summary note
Hélène, a beautiful socialite, tests her lover's sentiments by pretending to have become indifferent about him. To her horror, the lover, Jean, confesses with great relief to feeling the same about her, but pledges undying friendship. Seeking secret revenge, Hélène introduces Jean to an apparently virtuous young girl, Agnès, with whom he falls in love. It is only after their marriage that Jean discovers the truth about Agnès' past and discovers, also, at great cost, the real nature of love.
