Luther's prince, John Frederick the Magnanimous, together with Luther, himself, had been attacked in print by Duke Henry the Younger of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Duke Henry was among the bitterest antagonists of Luther and his followers. "Wider Hans Worst" is Luther's satyrical response to the duke.
