    Summary note
Surveys the history of the Jews in the region of Cochem-Zell, Germany, from the beginning of the settlement of Jews there in the 12th century until their annihilation in the Holocaust. The 12th-14th centuries were characterized by persecutions and pogroms on the background of the Crusades, ritual murder accusations, and plague epidemics for which Jews were blamed. In 1933, 413 Jews lived in the area of Cochem-Zell; by 1938, 204 had left, some for larger German towns or neighboring countries, which were eventually occupied by the Nazis. Describes the "Kristallnacht" pogrom, the gradual increases in discrimination, and the crowding of Jews in special Jewish houses. 207 Jews were deported to concentration camps during 1942; only nine survived. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism).
