Summary note
Description: Letters sent and received by the Australian Secretary of State, many of which refer to European applications to emigrate to the Australian colonies. Many letters refer to particular ships, detailing their journey, the duration of the voyage and general conditions on board. There are particular references to the death of Chinese emigrants on board the 'Nepaul', the misconduct of the surgeon and master of the 'Hope' and the shipwrecks of the 'Monumentality' and the 'Annie Jane'. General information on the arrival of various ships in Victoria and Melbourne is included. Several letters refer to the outbreak of cholera on board emigrant ships and in the Australian colonies and the reactive construction of cholera hospitals. Other letters refer to the transportation of convicts and their families to Australia, the arrival of Irish orphan emigrants, amendments to the Passengers' Act, the mining industry and want of emigrant labourers and the purchase and allocation of crown lands in the Australian colonies.
