Summary note
What is zydeco? This film, by Robert Mugge (a brilliant documentary filmmaker specialising in Afro-American music), brings clarity to this very special rural music, taking us to its epicentre in the towns of Lafayette and Lake Charles in Louisiana. Through interviews, concert excerpts and popular festivals captured in the backlands of this southern state, we are given an understanding of the impact and the rise of this vibrant scene, a typically Creole mixture impregnated with blues, rhythm & blues, country and Cajun folklore. Clifton Chenier, THE great name of the genre, who succeeded in exporting this music internationally, turns out to be the tip of the iceberg. Here, we discover other kings, other princes marvellously illustrating the different generations of musicians who still treasure this beautiful, unique dance music. Its tempos keep hundreds of people coming each weekend to vibrate with this sound of the accordion, the king of zydeco instruments. While this film was made more than 20 years ago, it is important to note that the popularity of this scene is still very present and appreciated in the open-air dances of the deep south. The charismatic Boozoo Chavis, the incomparable Beau Jocque, the genial Nathan Williams, the humble farmer John Delafosse and other actors of this music, which has remained authentic and tied to local people. Swinging accordions, washboards, bluesy guitars and rock'n'roll ardour, itchy feet ensue through this singular musical wellspring in Louisiana. Julien D.
