Notes
  • Oriented with north to the left of the map, thus the equator is shown vertically.
  • An allegorical map of the Spanish Empire showing the empire as a crowned female figure.
  • Spain forms her head, her crown includes the names of Iberian Kings, the Americas form her mantle, the sailing routes from America to the Philippines form the folds of her skirt and the Philippines form her feet. One hand holds her staff (the equator) and the other holds a flaming sword inscribed with biblical quotations - Padrón.
  • Psalms 58:14, 2 Maccabees 15:16 on the sword (which points across England) infers Spain's power (and not England's - the map of the Americas names only Spanish possessions). It is suggested Spain is the country chosen by God to rule - Padrón.
  • Columns in the lower corners of the map are inscribed with "PLVS ULTRA."
  • Signed "Laur.s Atlas Sculp. Mar.e" at lower right.
  • Published shortly after the 1761 Treaty of El Pardo which revoked the 1750 Treaty of Madrid, both linked to the historical Treaty of Tordesillas and its line of demarcation between Spanish and Portugese possessions - Padrón.
  • Published to accompany "Theses Mathematicas de Cosmographia, Geographia y hydrographi en que el Globo Terraqueo se contempla por respecto al Mundo hispanico ..." (Manila: Imprenta de la Compañia de Jesus, por E. Nicolàs de la Cruz Bagay, 1761) - see the British Library's Maps 57.c.28. for a photocopy and transcript of the original publication in private possession. The thesis was presented at the Jesuit University of Manila by Memije - Quirino.
  • Memije also produced a geographical map ("Aspecto Geographico ... ") - see Maps K. Top.118.18.
  • Titled "Aspecto Symbolico del Mundo Hispanico, puntualmente arreglado al Geographico: por D. Vicente Memije, 1761. 2 tab" in the Catalogue of Maps, Prints, Drawings, etc., forming the geographical and topographical collection attached to the Library of his late Majesty King George the third, etc., London, 1829.
