Summary note
Bird's-eye view of Manila, with Binondo, La Estacada and Pasig River on the left, town within fortified walls in the middle, and cultivated land on the right, below title within engraved cartouche decorated with Royal arms, lions and boys blowing trumpets on the left, portrait of Marshal Fernando Valdés offering the view to the King within ornamental frame in the middle, and explanatory text within cartouche decorated with garlands of fruit and flowers under the coat of arms of Manila on the right. Printed on two sheets assembled together.
Notes
María Lourdes Díaz-Trechuelo Spínola believed that the print could have been published in Mexico, rather than in Manila. This author suggested a date between 1715 and 1718 for the drawing after which the print was made. The title cartouche in Maps K. Top. 116.40. has been extensively re-worked, but the date of an earlier state published in 1717 is still visible.
Provenance
Digital reproduction of physical item held by the British Library.
