Notes
  • Originally published in 1590 as: De gli habiti antichi et moderni di diverse parti del mondo
  • Date of publication from colophon: In Venetia MDXCVIII appresso Gio. Bernardo Sessa.
  • The original 1590 edition included some 420 woodcuts attributed to Christoph Krieger [Cristoforo Guerra], who died before completing the 450 cuts stipulated in his contract; this 2nd edition of 1598 contains 88 additional woodcuts; see Bayer. Woodcuts also attributed to Cesare Vecellio and Giovanni Chrieger.
  • Verso of each leaf of text contains a woodcut (drafting sometimes attributed to Titian), in ornamental border, faced by descriptive text in Italian and Latin. Italian text printed in italic type in upper half of page; Latin text printed in roman type in lower half of page.
  • Title within elaborate cartouche, featuring a figure in each corner in native dress from the four continents of Europe, Asia, Africa, and America; the Sessa cat-and-mouse device in small oval cartouche in lower part of cartouche; a large version of the device appears on verso of last leaf within ornamental cartouche within architectural woodcut border, with Sessa's motto "Dissimilium in fida societas."
  • Head-pieces; ornamental initials; text illustrated with 505 full-page woodcuts, most by Christoph Krieger, on the verso of each leaf, depicting the costumes of the people of Europe, Asia, and Africa; the illustrations in Libro XII ("De gli habiti dell'America," leaves 488-507) depict the local dress of inhabitants of Peru, Cuzco, Mexico, Virginia, and Florida, both men and women, especially interesting for the early depictions of Native Americans.
  • Signatures: a-g⁸ A-3R⁸ 3S⁴.
  • Last leaf blank.
  • Includes indexes.
