Summary note
"Hellenistic and Roman Syria and the Near East has been studied for centuries. This handbook includes 50 chapters written by experts from a variety of disciplines: archaeology, including classical, near eastern and Islamic archaeology, ancient history, anthropology, art history, data and network science, epigraphy, and historiography. Together these chapters shed new light on the vast regions that made up Hellenistic and later Roman Syria and the Near East. The material and written evidence from the region is considered side by side with the historical sources as well as scientific results coming out of archaeological science as well as network science and shows in which ways new knowledge about the region can be brought to the forefront. The dynamic, volatile, diverse, and culturally rich regions have left us with a world heritage that is abundant - and in many places unfortunately also under constant threat. In this handbook knowledge about the newest research on numerous of these regions, sites and locations is forefronted together with overviews of the history of research. The handbook will be essential for students, scholars and the interested reader and will constitute a solid place to begin research and from which to gain an overview of the state of the art within the field"-- Provided by publisher.
