Summary note

• "Every time a study concerning the origin of man is published, it receives a huge resonance in the media and interest among scientists. But in this book, Yohai Atriya argues that the interest in the origin of man stems not only from the scientific attempt to confirm the theory of evolution, but rather from the attempt to explain the atrocities that occurred in the world in the 20th century. In fact, we yearn to find the bones of "the first man" and another skeleton next to him, and both of them are holding clubs and their skulls shattered because such findings will make it possible to claim that we are inherently evil. If we prove that man is inherently evil, we can remove responsibility for the atrocities around us from ourselves - "it is inherent in us." However, since scientists are unable to provide an explicit archaeological-historical finding that would indicate that we are "born murderers," we operate in another channel - technology is to blame for the killing, not man. For example, Albert Schafer, a senior figure in the Nazi regime, concluded his speech at the Nuremberg Trials: "There is nothing left to stop science and technology, if they are used without criticism and restraint, from completing the work of destroying humanity that they (science and technology) have begun with such terrifying efficiency." On the other hand, the father of the atomic bomb, Robert Oppenheimer, also believed that the development of the bomb stemmed solely from the technical possibilities that had been discovered by scientists. According to this approach, man is not responsible for dropping the atomic bomb, and certainly not for creating artificial intelligence, the potential for damage from which is already known. Through an innovative discussion of archaeological findings, philosophical positions, popular science books, and classic films, Atria seeks to demonstrate how the search for the bones of the first man and technological dynamics operate from an apocalyptic perspective: the search for the bones of the first man prevents the desire to uncover the beginning of time, while technology pushes us towards the end of the world and the end of time. • בכל פעם שמתפרסם מחקר שנוגע למוצא האדם הוא זוכה להד אדיר בתקשורת ולעניין בקרב מדענים. אך בספר זה יוחאי עתריה טוען שהעניין במוצאו של האדם נובע לא רק מהניסיון המדעי לאשש את תורת האבולוציה אלא דווקא מהניסיון להסביר את הזוועות שהתרחשו בעולם במאה ה-20. בעצם אנחנו משתוקקים למצוא את עצמות "האדם הראשון" ולידו עוד שלד, ובידי שניהם אלות וגולגולותיהם מנופצות משום שממצאים כאלה יאפשרו לטעון כי אנחנו רעים מטבענו. אם נוכיח שהאדם רע מטבעו, נוכל להסיר מעצמנו אחריות לזוועות מסביבנו - "זה טבוע בנו". אולם מאחר שמדענים אינם מסוגלים לספק ממצא ארכיאולוגי- היסטורי מפורש שיעיד כי אנחנו "רוצחים מלידה", אנחנו פועלים בעוד ערוץ - הטכנולוגיה אשמה בהרג, ולא האדם. כך למשל חתם אלברט שפאר, מבכירי המשטר הנאצי, את נאומו במשפטי נירנברג: "אין עוד דבר שיעצור בעד המדע והטכנולוגיה, אם אמנם יופעלו ללא ביקורת ורסן, מלהשלים את מלאכת השמדת האנושות שהם (המדע והטכנולוגיה) פתחו בה ביעילות כה מחרידה" מנגד, גם אבי פצצת האטום רוברט אופנהיימר גרס כי פיתוח הפצצה נבע בסך הכול מהאפשרויות הטכניות שהתגלו למדענים. לפי גישה זו, אין האדם אחראי להטלת פצצת האטום, ובוודאי לא ליצירת אינטליגנציה מלאכותית שהפוטנציאל לנזקים ממנה כבר ידוע. באמצעות דיון חדשני בממצאים ארכיאולוגיים, עמדות פילוסופיות, ספרי מדע פופולרי וסרטי מופת עתריה מבקש להוכיח כיצד החיפוש אחר עצמות האדם הראשון והדינמיקה הטכנולוגית פועלים מתוך תפיסה אפוקליפטית: החיפוש אחר עצמות האדם הראשון מונע מהתשוקה לחשוף את ראשית הזמן, ואילו הטכנולוגיה דוחפת אותנו לעבר סוף העולם וקץ הזמן. אך המטרה משותפת וסמויה: זיכוי האדם מאשמה והסרת אחריות למעשינו. -- Back cover.
