The chapter argues that parents' (re)appropriation of their childhood music involves negotiations of personal experiences with the music and negotiations of beliefs about what constitutes a valuable childhood. It also shows that musical parenting in terms of supporting children's contemporary co-construction of this music's meaning is a challenging but rewarding road for parents to embark on. The empirical base for the chapter consists of two sets of data. The first set is from an ethnographically oriented study of how one- to five-year-old children use music media (recorded music) in their everyday lives, and how these uses are described and legitimised. The second set is from an ongoing study of the social dynamics of the musical upbringing of children in the Norwegian welfare state (DYNAMUS), involving media history"-- |cProvided by publisher. 505 0 Mapping the landscapes of music early learning and development : handbook introduction -- Perspectives on music development -- Music family and community contexts -- Music with young children in sites of transition, trauma, and conflict -- Music and musicians in children's hospitals -- Music to address social and medical risk in children -- Musical development and neurodiversity -- Future perspectives. 650 0 Music in education. 650 0 Early childhood education. 650 0 Child development. 650 6 Éducation de la première enfance. 650 6 Enfants |xDéveloppement. 650 6 Musique en éducation. 650 7 early childhood education. |2aat 650 7 Child development |2fast 650 7 Early childhood education |2fast 650 7 Music in education |2fast 700 1 Barrett, Margaret S., |eeditor. |1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjHkr8688v9DhGjvCyrkTb 700 1 Welch, Graham |q(Graham F.), |eauthor. |1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjyg8h8yqDBvcGKv6JbFmm 776 08 |iOnline version: |tOXFORD HANDBOOK OF EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT IN MUSIC. |d[S.l.] : OXFORD UNIV PRESS US, 2023 |z9780190927530 |w(OCoLC)1407026110 830 0 Oxford handbooks 910 |cG0601mon |d3110-07 |gYBP |h326302 914 (OCoLC)on1379264704 |bOCoLC |cmatch |d20250312 |eprocessed |f1379264704 980 20214876 |f326302 |i220.00 |j180.40 |n40032623577 982 |cmus |q32101116151679
