Summary note
In 1990, producer Janos Darvas recorded this recital of the Goldberg Variations performed by the legendary pianist Sir András Schiff. Three decades later, Bach's music has never left Schiff who practices the composer's fugues for at least an hour a day. For him "there is a great liberty in performing in Bach's music, a lot more than with other composers". In 1741 the Goldberg Variations were published for "amateurs and the practice of spirituality", but they are above all a testament to the art of fugue. According to musicologist Patrick Szersnovicz "they are a large, playful collection, of rare contrapuntal density".
