Summary note
Join us at Milan's legendary La Scala for a brand-new production of a rarely seen opera gem: the original French version of Luigi Cherubini's masterpiece Médée, a heart-rending adaptation of the Medea myth, featuring rising soprano star Claire de Monteil in the formidable title role! This tale of betrayal, murder, and implacable vengeance is best known to opera fans in the Italian version famously revived by Maria Callas on this very stage in 1953 with Leonard Bernstein conducting-but few have had the chance to experience the work in its original 1797 French libretto by François-Benoît Hoffman, adapted from Euripedes by way of Corneille. La Scala's first return to this version, staged by the prolific and acclaimed Damiano Michieletto, boasts an all-star cast led by de Monteil, including French tenor Stanislas de Barbeyrac as Jason and Argentine bass Nahuel Di Pierro as Creon. La Scala's impeccable house orchestra is led by Michele Gamba, fresh off a heralded turn at New York's Metropolitan Opera in the 2023 production of Donizetti's L'Elisir d'amore and an excellent Rigoletto at La Scala in 2022.
