The great Philippe Herreweghe and his celebrated Orchestre des Champs-Élysées make their Festival de Granada debut with two of the most beloved masterworks of the symphonic repertoire: Mozart's "Jupiter" Symphony No. 41 and Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony No. 3! Mozart's 41st Symphony, his longest and his last, represents the pinnacle of his orchestral writing, "the greatest orchestral work of the world which preceded the French Revolution" (Sir George Grove) -- while Beethoven's Third-unprecedented in structure and in scope-marks a decisive turning point in Beethoven's oeuvre and in the history of music. Already a legend for his renderings of Baroque music with La Chapelle Royale and Collegium Vocale Gent, Herreweghe founded the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées in 1991 and quickly formed it into one of the world's best period orchestras-a formidable ensemble to match this formidable program.
