Summary note
The first of Mozart's storied collaborations with librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, The Marriage of Figaro recounts the amorous adventures and misadventures of Figaro and Susanna, valet and maid to Count and Countess Almaviva, who must navigate a web of misunderstandings and machinations by the philandering Count on their way to a happy ending... The timeless comic opera favorite looks utterly flawless in this production from the 2023 Salzburg Festival, directed for the stage by Martin Kušej and starring a full lineup of opera powerhouses, including Sabine Devieilhe as Susanna and Lea Desandre in the scene-stealing "pants role" of Cherubino, whose aria "Voi, che sapete" is among the most famous in all of opera. In the pit, the gold-standard Vienna Philharmonic performs Mozart's extraordinary score, led by celebrated countertenor and conductor Raphaël Pichon. Photo © Salzburg Festival / Matthias Horn.
