Summary note
A file of correspondence and reports concerning the internal situation in Hungary. The documents cover meetings of the Central Committee of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party concerning economic developments, the exchange of party cards, and celebrations to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the October Revolution -- and speeches by the Hungarian leader, János Kádár, on the internal situation, the economy, and the development of socialism in Hungary. Other documents in the file cover articles published in the Hungarian press concerning the government's commitment to the communist revolution, the construction of socialism in Hungary, and the opportunities for Hungarian citizens to travel abroad. The documents also discuss the Hungarian government's attitude towards Eurocommunism -- amendments to the Hungary's civil code -- and events to mark Petőfi Day, held to celebrate a nineteenth-century Hungarian poet who called on Hungarians to fight for their right to national independence.
