A file containing documents concerning East-West relations. Subjects covered in the file include indirect talks on the war in Afghanistan -- the need for the United Kingdom to restore a dialogue with the Soviet Union -- and a NATO resolution on East-West relations after the crisis in Poland. Other subjects discussed in the file include the views of the new American Secretary of State, George Shultz, on the subject -- strains in East-West relations caused by Soviet behaviour -- and the increasing problems of the Soviet economy. Documents in the file include an address to the British parliament by the American president, Ronald Reagan -- an article by the West German foreign minister, Hans-Dietrich Genscher, entitled "Towards an overall Western strategy for peace, freedom, and progress" -- and a lecture on the future of East-West relations given by the former Canadian ambassador to the Soviet Union, Robert Ford.
