A file of documents concerning the internal situation in Poland. Subjects discussed in the file include closer Polish-Soviet ties under Edward Gierek -- Gierek's leadership and the question of secession -- the housing situation in Poland -- the introduction of a new pensions bill -- increased criticism of the regime in the Polish press -- and the implementation of the Helsinki Final Act in Poland. Other subjects discussed in the file include the growth of food prices under both Gierek and Władysław Gomułka, Gierek's predecessor -- protests against these price increases -- the response of the Polish militia to the protests -- the activities of the Workers' Defence Committee -- state responses to the dissident movement -- hunger strikes and petitions launched to convince the state to release prisoners -- and the role of the church and students in the dissident movement.
