Summary note
A file of correspondence and reports concerning the recognition of the Baltic states by the United Kingdom. The documents cover requests for clarification of British government policy on the status of the Baltic states since their annexation by the Soviet Union in 1940 -- and confirmation of the British recognition of the annexation as de facto only, rather than de jure. Other documents in the file cover the status of the Baltic legations in Britain -- the diplomatic privileges accorded to staff -- and their immunity with regard to national insurance payments, the taxation of bank interest, and ratings relief. The file also covers the shipment to the Soviet Union of documents relating to British claims on property in the former Baltic states -- appeals from émigré groups on behalf of the Baltic states -- and a decision by Australia to recognise the takeover of the Baltic states by the Soviet Union as de facto.
