Summary note
A file of correspondence and reports concerning commercial relations between Bulgaria and the United Kingdom. The documents cover a visit to Bulgaria by the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Trade, Eric Deakins -- details of the programme, which included a visit to the Plovdiv trade fair -- and details of Deakins' meetings with Bulgarian politicians and officials including Andrei Lukanov, Ivan Nedev, and Andon Traikov, during which discussions covered Anglo-Bulgarian trade relations, the Plovdiv fair, and the next Bulgarian five-year plan. Other documents in the file cover Deakins' visits to Bulgarian vineyards, factories, and a sheep-breeding station -- a mission to Bulgaria undertaken by members of the British Agricultural Export Council -- and a proposed visit to Britain by Varban Dzhambov, a deputy minister at the Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry. The file includes briefs for Deakins' visit, covering British aims and objectives for the visit, the historical and political background of Bulgaria, and Anglo-Bulgarian cultural exchanges.
