Summary note
A file of correspondence and reports concerning the political situation in Albania. The documents cover personnel changes within the Albanian communist party and government -- discussions on the health of the Albanian leader, Enver Hoxha -- and reports that the Albanian prime minister, Mehmet Shehu, is consolidating his power base. Other documents in the file cover discussions with Yugoslav, Greek, Belgian, and American diplomats on their countries' relations with the Albanian regime and on the internal situation in Albania -- and analysis of Albanian foreign policy, discussing Albanian foreign trade, Albanian-Chinese relations, and Albania's adherence to the principles of "Marxist fundamentalism". The file also covers British relations with Albania -- the possible re-establishing of Anglo-Albanian relations -- allegations of Albanian irredentism -- the activities of Kosovan émigré groups -- and moves to draw up a new state constitution in Albania.
