A file containing documents relating to the domestic political situation in Poland following the crisis of December 1970. Subjects covered in the file include reports of politburo meetings appearing in Polish newspapers -- the efforts of the Polish United Workers' Party (P.Z.P.R.) to improve its image through self-criticism -- speeches by the Polish president, Edward Gierek, and the prime minister, Piotr Jaroszewicz -- renewed strikes at the shipyards in Gdańsk and Szczecin -- and discussion on the policy of "rotation of cadres", involving officials stepping down after set periods of time. Other subjects discussed in the file include the annulment of food-price increases following a generous credit from the Soviet Union -- discussion of the Soviet attitude to the situation in Poland -- the eighth plenum of the Central Committee of the P.Z.P.R., which included extensive discussion of the "ten-day crisis" -- and comparisons with the events of the "Polish October" in 1956.
