Summary note
A file of correspondence, reports, and legal material concerning political developments in Romania. The documents discuss the Romanian government's introduction of a decree issuing the Romanian public with identity cards, which the British Embassy in Bucharest notes will enable the Romanian police to track a person's whereabouts at all times. The documents also cover the staging of national elections in Romania, at which the Romanian regime won 99.85% of the votes cast, on a turnout of 99.96% -- and the view of James Dalton Murray, the British Ambassador to Romania, that whilst this election was a "parody of democracy", the present regime "enjoys a greater measure of support among the population at large than it did four years ago". The documents also cover the death of Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, the Romanian leader -- and the promotion of Nicolae Ceaușescu to become the new leader of Romania.
