Summary note
A file containing documents concerning Italian-Romanian relations. Subjects covered in the file include a visit to Romania by the Italian Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, during which he had discussed Vietnam and other international affairs with Corneliu Mănescu, the Romanian foreign minister, and European security with Nicolae Ceaușescu, the Romanian premier. Other papers in the file discuss the return visit to Rome made by Mănescu, during which he had held talks covering Vietnam, an East-West security conference, consular relations, and the two countries' long-term trade agreement, which the Italian government felt was skewed in Romania's favour. The Italian representatives had pressed Mănescu to encourage the purchase of industrial equipment from Italy to redress the imbalance. Documents in the file include a telegram from the American Embassy in Rome reporting on Mănescu's visit -- and the communiqué issued at the end of the trip.
