Summary note
A file of correspondence and a report offering a review of political events in Czechoslovakia during 1965. The review covers the introduction of a new economic system, which places emphasis on efficiency, the laws of supply and demand, and flexible pricing -- the successes of Czechoslovak industry -- and the shortcomings of the agricultural sector, where the poor harvest forced the importing of wheat and potatoes, and flooding led to the loss of crops and livestock in Slovakia. Further commentary covers Czechoslovak support for Soviet policies on Vietnam, the unity of international communism, and West Germany -- and developments in church-state relations, which saw the Archbishop of Prague, Josef Beran, depart for Rome. The review also covers developments in Anglo-Czechoslovak relations, including visits by British ministers, British representation at trade fairs, Anglo-Czechoslovak commercial relations, and cultural relations between the two countries. A calendar of notable events is also included in the file.
