Summary note

A file of correspondence concerning the employment of nationals from communist countries in the United Kingdom. The correspondence covers a recent submission to the Home Secretary on the employment of nationals from Eastern Europe, with the exception of Yugoslavia and East Germany, proposing a ban on all labour permits apart from those for au pairs, domestic workers, and individuals deemed to possess "special skills". Further commentary covers the need to address individual cases -- and plans to discuss the subject at a forthcoming conference for ambassadors working in Eastern Europe.
