Summary note

A file containing documents concerning Bulgarian-Czechoslovak relations. Subjects covered in the file include the points made in a joint declaration issued by the countries' leaders after a visit to Bulgaria made by Antonín Novotný, the Czechoslovak president. These included an increase in trade between the two countries -- condemnation of American action in Vietnam -- support for a Warsaw Pact plan to strengthen European security -- criticism of apparent West German aggression and revanchism -- and condemnation of the West German government's perceived desire to obtain nuclear weapons. Documents in the file include telegrams from Sir William Harpham, the British Ambassador in Sofia, about the visit -- and Harpham's despatch to London giving a fuller account of the trip, and analysis of the outcome. Other documents in the file include a note from the British Embassy in Prague reporting that a delegation of Bulgarian Communist Party representatives had visited Czechoslovakia to undertake a study tour.
