Summary note
A file of correspondence concerning the Soviet war memorial in West Berlin. The documents discuss the decision of the British Military Government in West Berlin to remove the barbed wire fences around the Soviet war memorial, replacing them with barriers to be guarded by British troops -- and the view of Frank Roberts, the British Ambassador to West Germany, that the West German public must not be misled into thinking that Britain has weakened its security measures in West Berlin. The documents also cover a ceremony held at the war memorial to mark the twentieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War -- and a proposal to have the British infantry platoon guarding the memorial replaced with military police, thus releasing the infantry for other duties. Other documents in the file comment on the question of who should represent the British government at Konrad Adenauer's funeral if he were to suddenly pass away.
