Summary note

A file of correspondence and reports on British representation in Bulgaria. The documents cover the valedictory despatch of the outgoing British Ambassador, Sir William Harpham -- and the presentation of credentials by his successor, Desmond Crawley. In his valedictory report, the former ambassador outlined developments in Anglo-Bulgarian relations, noting that although few benefits have been derived politically or economically, the effort was still worthwhile. Further commentary covers economic developments in Bulgaria -- the prospects for the development of Anglo-Bulgarian trade -- the attitude of the country's youth towards the West -- and the ambassador's relations with the country's leaders, who it is claimed are interested in improving relations with the U.K. despite their communist beliefs. The file also includes a draft of a speech prepared for the new ambassador -- a summary of talking points for meetings with Bulgarian officials -- and details of the ambassador's presentation ceremony, which included a meeting with the president of the National Assembly, Georgi Traikov.
