Summary note

A file of correspondence concerning the defection of a Hungarian member of staff at the British Embassy in Budapest. The documents discuss a request by a Hungarian citizen named Pataki, who has been working in the embassy as a butler for the last five months, for asylum from the Austrian authorities, which had occurred during a recent visit to Vienna with other officials from the embassy. The documents also cover British Ambassador's view that Pataki is "making a serious mistake in exchanging good prospects with the Embassy for the uncertainties of refugee life" -- and his fear that the Hungarian regime may use Pataki's defection to bring pressure upon the British Embassy.
