Summary note
A file containing documents concerning Bulgarian-French relations. Subjects covered in the file include a visit to France to be made by Todor Zhivkov, the Bulgarian leader. A note about the visit from the British Embassy in Sofia reports that there were differing interpretations of the visit, which were that Zhivkov wanted to strengthen his position before the forthcoming Bulgarian Communist Party conference, or that he would relinquish the ceremonial part of his role at that congress, and wanted to visit France before doing so. Other matters considered include a visit to Bulgaria by a French delegation, which had discussed agreements on cultural, scientific, and agricultural exchanges. The file also contains a despatch from the British Embassy in Paris reporting on Zhivkov's visit, which states that he had signed the agreements, and that he had stated his wish to increase trade with France and Britain, but reduce trade with West Germany.
