Summary note
A file of correspondence, reports, and press material concerning relations between the Soviet Union and China. The documents include a series of articles from the British press suggesting that the Soviet Union and China are "in showdown", with a clear ideological divide opening between Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet leader, and Mao Zedong, the Chinese leader. The documents also contain a pamphlet disseminated within the French Communist Party accusing the Communist Party of China of attempting to "go behind the backs of the leaders of the brother parties" to establish China, rather than the Soviet Union, as the international vanguard of communism -- and several articles from the British press questioning the validity of this pamphlet, and theorising the damage it may cause to the façade of solidarity presented by the Sino-Soviet bloc. Other documents cover the Chinese role at the Twenty-Second Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
