Summary note
A file containing documents relating to the crash of El Al flight 402. Subjects discussed in the file include the decision by the International Court of Justice (I.C.J.) that it was unable to adjudicate in the case brought by the Israeli government against Bulgaria, due to Bulgaria not accepting the compulsory jurisdiction of the court. Other subjects discussed in the file include an erroneous Reuters report that this decision had meant that British and American cases before the I.C.J. had automatically lapsed -- an American request that Britain continue with its I.C.J. case and not withdraw -- and Canadian plans to settle out of court with the Bulgarian government to ensure that its citizens received compensation more quickly. Documents in the file include an I.C.J. communiqué granting Bulgaria an extension to the deadline for submitting documents in the British case -- and the British letter withdrawing its case.
