Summary note
A file of correspondence concerning the Romanian press. Subjects covered in the file include the production of Romanian press summaries by the United Kingdom and United States legations -- the publication of a new weekly magazine Magazinul, which aims to capture a populist market while towing the party line -- and the decision of the U.S. Department of Justice to prosecute the Romanian-American Publishing Association, which they consider is acting as an agent of the Romanian Government. The offending newspaper, Romanul-Amerikan is alleged to have been reproducing the official party line and has failed to register as the agent of a foreign principal. Further correspondence discusses opposition to plans for the U.S. Department of Justice to use the press summaries produced by the legations as evidence.
