Summary note
A file of correspondence and memoranda concerning cultural relations between Britain and the Soviet Union. The documents discuss a move by the British government to re-establish cultural links with the Soviet Union, after they were suspended in the aftermath of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution -- the resumption of the activities of the British Council's Soviet Relations Committee, which was similarly suspended -- and a visit to Britain by Nikolai Mikhailov, the Soviet Minister of Culture. Other documents cover the jamming of B.B.C. broadcasts in the Soviet Union -- proposed theatrical and educational exchanges between Britain and the Soviet Union -- and a request from the Soviet government for the Soviet Relations Committee to include "large-scale cultural manifestations" in its programme of future activities. The documents also comment on an article published in Kommunist by Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet leader, calling for a "closer link of literature and art with the life of the people".
