Summary note
A file of memoranda and communications concerning the decisions taken by the Russia Committee during 1949. The documents discuss the development of British economic policy towards the Soviet Union, recognising that this should be carried out in cooperation with the United States -- the development of East-West trade and whether this should be increased -- the first Soviet nuclear weapons test and its potential significance, with reference to whether this increases the threat of war -- and the successes of various international Communist movements and their potential for subversion. Other documents refer to the split between Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union and its importance to the Soviets, including questions on whether the Soviet Union may seek to "liquidate" Josip Broz Tito, the leader of Yugoslavia, to prevent Yugoslavia from receiving Western aid -- and the communisation of China and its potential significance for Chinese relations with both Britain and the Soviet Union.
