Summary note
A file of correspondence and reports concerning trade unions in the two Germanies. The documents discuss the fourth congress of the Free German Trade Union Confederation in East Berlin -- developments within the West German Trade Union Confederation -- and the fears of the West German government that communists may look to infiltrate West German trade unions. The documents also contain a report on developments in East Germany during the first half of 1955 in the fields of "employment, social insurance, housing, and industrial relations" -- and a series of notes by the British labour attaché in Bonn on domestic employment and wage rises in West Germany. Other documents cover the role of Christian trade unions in West Germany -- a congress of West German mineworkers -- and two unofficial strikes carried out by West German workers, which are notable for being the first in West Germany since before the Nazi seizure of power.
