Summary note
A file of correspondence and press reports on an amnesty declared by the incoming Czechoslovak President, Antonín Novotný. The amnesty declared an end to criminal proceedings in cases for which the penalty was less than three years' imprisonment, and a reduction by three years in the sentences of serving prisoners -- however, the amnesty contained a long list of cases to which it did not apply, which could be interpreted to cover all political crimes. The file also contains a report that 53,000 "People's Judges" were taking part in the administration of justice in Czechoslovakia in 1957.
