A sociable, ornate, and deeply theatrical type of poetry, Della Cruscanism was associated with writers like Robert Merry, Mary Robinson, and Hannah Cowley. While Merry is the poet most commonly associated with the Della Cruscan school, this book argues that Della Cruscanism was a movement dominated by female poets and that this was one of the key reasons for the later disavowal and downgrading of its poetic accomplishments. It offers a close examination of these women writers and their role in shaping the poetic culture of the fashionable newspaper. In doing so, this study offers the first account of the feminization of the fashionable newspaper and of popular literary culture in the final years of the eighteenth century. 650 0 Women authors, English |y19th century |xHistory and criticism. 650 0 Della Cruscans (English writers) 650 0 English poetry |y19th century |xHistory and criticism. 650 0 English newspapers |xSections, columns, etc. |xWomen. 650 0 English newspapers |xHistory |y19th century. 776 08 |iebook version : |z9783031372674 830 0 Palgrave studies in the Enlightenment, romanticism and cultures of print 910 |cG0601mon |d3110-07 |gYBP |h943678 914 (OCoLC)on1381294035 |bOCoLC |cmatch |d20240710 |eprocessed |f1381294035 980 20333095 |f943678 |i119.99 |j98.39 |n40031980565 982 |cf |q32101119745741
