Summary note
"On September 27, 2020, the Government of India notified two historically significant legislations that could fundamentally change the policies governing the country’s agriculture. The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 are aimed at paving the way for operation of large traders through contract farming. More fundamentally, however, these legislations would introduce deregulation of primary agricultural markets, which seems obvious especially because the minimum support prices that the government currently announces for 22 crops as a price stabilization measure does not find any mention in the legislations"-- Introduction.
