Summary note
Commentary on the Shamsīyah of Najm al-Dīn ʻUmar ibn ʻAlī Kātibī Qazwīnī with numerous marginal glosses taken from other commentaries on the Shamsīyah. Text begins abruptly, missing approximately 4 pages from the beginning. Leaves 5-7 have been rebound into the text upside down and out of order. Three inserts have been taped to leaves (taped to f. 105v, 107r, 110r).
Notes
  • A leaf laid into the manuscript contains notes made in March 1939 by Rev. Peter Barsoum, pastor of the Assyrian-Apostolic Church in Worcester, Mass. He notes that an inscription on the last page indicates that the manuscript was donated by Hadji Ab-Bassim to the school (possibly the school of Bekikhan in the city of Jazir). This leaf of notes is on file in the Library.
  • Binding: Bound in brown leather over pasteboard with flap (Type II). Covers have been reinforced with burlap sacking over the spine and around the foredge hinge. Back cover and flap are blind stamped with mandorla and frame. Front cover stamped section seems to have been cut out; the leather that is left is cracked and worn.
  • Decoration: Rubrications in red, some now faded to brown; tables in red and black (f. 85r, 106r, 107r, 110r, 113-114r), simple geometrical diagrams in black (126r-127r).
  • Foliation: Modern foliation added in pencil, upper left recto; catchwords on most versos, last word on the page, repeated at top of following page.
  • Forms part of the Edgar F. Smith Memorial Collection.
  • Layout: 17 long lines with extensive marginalia on all sides; frame-ruled.
  • Ms. codex.
  • Origin: Copied completed on 4 Rajab 986 A.H. (September 16, 1578) by Ibrāhīm ibn Qāsim ibn ʻAlī ibn Yūsuf.
  • Script: Written in naskh with some marginal notations in nastaʻliq.
  • Title supplied by cataloger.
